Sightseeing tours, things to do and place to stay in Moltrasio, Lake Como.
Visit, Lake Como.
The Municipality of Moltrasio consists of eleven hamlets: Casarico, Carisciano, Creolino, Somaino, Luscesino, Vignola, Casarevolo, Roiano, Tosnacco, Vergonzano e Vighinzano and Borgo.
The town stretches from the western shore of the lake branch of Como, up to reach the slopes of Mount Bisbino that it shares with Cernobbio. The sun kisses the whole town since sunrise, and its mild climate makes Moltrasio and ideal place for holidays.
The Musician Vincenzo Bellini used to stay at the noble villas of the village: at Villa Salterio he composed the opera La Straniera and part of the Sonnambula.
In 1977, the worldwide-known stylist Gianni Versace bought Villa Fontanelle, where he used to spend his holidays together with his V.I.P friends: he loved Lake Como so much that he wanted to be buried here.
In the 12th century, Moltrasio witnessed its peack of splendour thank to the quarry of the so called Stone of Moltrasio, a valuable kind of hard stone largely employed by the famous Maestri Comacini to build wonderful churches and palaces.
What to do, to visit and to see in Moltrasio
Stone quarry.
Moltrasio was famous for the quarries of Moltrasio Stone, much used to build houses and walls, which can be reached by following the Sentiero di Sort path.
From the village follow the signposts Luoghi della pietra.
Waterfall Cam.
A picturesque waterfall just above the village, which can be reached by following the Luoghi dell'acqua signpost. The waterfall, hidden by vegetation, becomes a tranquil pool of water and then continues towards the lake.
Many years ago, this stream moved a mill, known as the Cam Mill.
Microturbine and old mill
In the 1920s, this small river fed the municipal waterworks and powered a turbine that provided public lighting. In 2012, a new 25 kW micro-turbine was built to take advantage of the 160 m water jump.
Inside the building, an old mill was installed, which used to operate in Rungia, today's Via Durini.
The mill was already in operation in 1806 and produced wheat and chestnut flour. It was also equipped with a millstone for pressing olives.
Washhouse of Proo
The name of this charming wash-house derives from the locality in which it is located. It was built in 1894 to serve the hamlet of Tosnacco. Before its construction, people had to walk down to the lake to wash their clothes, covering more than a kilometre. Today, it is still possible to admire the old construction made with stones from Moltrasio.
