Itinerary 2 - From the Church of St. Giorgio to the Barbarossa Tower
Well, we leave the church and, after enjoying the view above Mandello del Lario, we continue on our way.
Turning our backs to the church, we take the well-marked Via del Viandante, a cobblestone road that climbs to the right (also marked by blue arrow over a manhole). Continue to house number 1E, where you will find a private road that climbs to the right taking you into the hamlet of Maggiana, and finally to the Barbarossa Tower.
The tower dates back to the 12th century, and a plaque found here testifies that Frederick Barbarossa stayed there in the year 1158. Today the tower is among the best preserved on Lake Como, offering five levels that are all accessible and a terrace overlooking the lake. Inside is the Museum of Peasant Art, open to the public from May to September, on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm.
Entrance is free. For hours, tours and more information click HERE
Every year in June, the traditional village festival "La Torre in Festa" is celebrated here with an atmospheric medieval historical re-enactment, period costumes and typical cuisine. The whole small village is worth a careful visit: the atmosphere is intimate, picturesque and full of history.
