Special sightseeing in Moltrasio.
If you are looking for special sightseeing and curiosities to see and visit in Moltrasio, don't miss the Pizzallo waterfall.
Moltrasio has always been linked to water and stone, elements that have marked its life for centuries. This spectacular waterfall fully represents the soul of the village, which is criss-crossed by rocks.
The waterfall has marked the lives of all the inhabitants of Moltrasio, not only for its beauty and charm, but also for its ancient use. In the 19th century, thanks to a municipal resolution, the area was named the Valle dei Molini, due to its extraordinary importance in the urban and economic fabric of Moltrasio.
In the years between 1500 and 1800 there was a strong mining activity in the area. The famous Moltrasio stone, much used in building construction, was extracted here and production was reserved exclusively for mill owners, an activity that was legitimised by appropriate notarial acts.
The village of Pizzallo, with the grandeur of its waters, was already operating eleven mills in the early eighteenth century, built along the descent of the stream. At the time, the village counted around 500 people, so it is easy to see that this system not only benefited the small community, but also produced for the neighbouring villages, fuelling the prosperity of the people of Pizzallo.
The last mill in operation in Moltrasio stopped working in the 1950s and was built in 1787.
Vincenzo Bellini a Moltrasio.
It is said that the composer Vincenzo Bellini (1801-1835) was also inspired, during his long stays in Moltrasio, by this wonderful gift of nature.
