Visit Malgrate, Lake Como

Malgrate is a delightful center on the west shore of the branch of Lecco, just opposite Lecco.
In medieval times it was a large village with its own castle, known as the Fort of San Grato. The fortress, however, was destroyed during the Ten Years' War between Milan and Como. Tradition has it that because of those bloody war chapters, Grato (meaning grateful) was changed to Malgrato (meaning grieved). In Malgrate are beautiful ancient palaces of the local nobility, such as palazzo Agudio, where Parini wrote his famous poem Il Mattino.
Malgrate experienced its heyday in the 19th century. They even called it the Venice of the Lario, due to the great artistic brilliance of the intellectuals who frequented this place.
A great local entrepreneur and true genius was born here: Pietro Vassena. His many inventions include the incredible C3-bathyscaphe. We talk about it HERE.
Today Malgrate has completely renovated its lakefront, which is modern, architecturally stylish and green-conscious. Its particular design seems almost to skim the waters of the lake: it really invites to lie down on one of the many lawn-covered terraces and admire Lecco and the impressive Mount Resegone.
