What to see to visit and things to do in Lierna Lake Como

Visit Lierna, Lake Como

The probable origin of its name comes from the word Hibernia (from Latin hibĕrnum, meaning winter), as it appears to have been a winter camp of the Roman army.
Longobard Queen Theodolinda loved to stay here in the tower of Lierna Castle; years later the same tower guarded the imprisonment of Adelaide of Burgundy, who was twice queen consort of Italy. Her story really sounds like an incredible novel! In 951 Berengar II took possession of the kingdom of Italy, killing King Lothair II of Italy and seizing his wife Adelaide. Adelaide was imprisoned then in Lierna Castle until a gentleman, Martin of Bellagio, freed her to take her in marriage to the next King of Italy and Holy Roman Emperor, Otto I of Saxony. Even Gioachino Rossini dedicated an opera to her entitled Adelaide di Borgogna.
Today Lierna is a popular destination and it’s easily reachable from Milan by train. Its beach, called Riva Bianca, is among the most beautiful beaches on Lake Como.

What to see to visit and things to do in Lierna

Il Castello di Lierna

The castle stands on a natural promontory north of the municipality, in the direction toward Varenna. It dates back to Roman times, but has been completely remodeled over the centuries. Of the ancient building, one can still admire the medieval walls overlooking the lake, the plan of a watchtower and the small church of Saints Maurice and Lazarus dating back to the 11th century.
The fortress was of strategic importance in the 10-year war between Como and Milan (1117 - 1127). Lierna was allied with the Milanese, who defeated the Como people in August 1127.
The Lierna Castle, now transformed into a village hamlet, has an irresistible charm.
When you wander through its narrow alleys, it feels like you're going back centuries, and time here seems to stand still.
Once you leave the castle, we suggest you walk along the coast in a southerly direction until you reach the Lakeside promenade Castiglioni. You will be surprised by the many stone houses with small colorful gardens! Moreover, among the noteworthy villas here you can find Villa Pini, dating from 1921, with a large park that is home to a ferruginous water spring and beautiful magnolia, palm and pine trees. This is followed by Villa Besana (or Aurelia) from 1920 with eclectic and Art Nouveau elements.
