Visit Dongo, Lake Como
The ancient town of Dongo stood just above the Roman hamlet of Martinico. The center then developed along the plain below and around the stream Albano, which over the time became one of the most thriving industrial zones of Lake Como.
The first furnaces for ironworking arose already in the 1400s and were used for processing the iron extracted from the mines in the Valle Dogana, newly discovered not far away from the town.
In 1771 the plants became the property of Pietro Rubini, who in 1789 built the first charcoal blast furnace to produce cast iron. In 1839 it would become a company joined by Rubini-Scalini-Falck, who gave rise to an important steel industry under the name of Falck.
Dongo is best remembered for an exciting, decisive historical fact, that marked the end of the fascist regime. In fact, here is where Mussolini was captured on his way out from Italy to Switzerland.
Only a few days later he was brought to Mezzegra and executed there on April 28, 1945.
Today Dongo, along with the adjacent towns of Gravedona and Domaso, is a popular tourist center especially for tourists from northern Europe thanks to its many campsites, restaurants, sports facilities, spectacular hiking trails in the mountains, long beaches and endless surfing, kiting and sailing opportunities.
