Visit Dervio, Lake Como
This land was originally inhabited by small units of huts used as shelter by nomadic peoples: they were first Ligurians and then the Celts came. However, Dervio began a rapid evolutionary process only with the arrival of the Romans. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Dervio underwent the various barbarian and Lombard migrations, and later the invasions by the Franks and the Ottonians.
Pretty interesting is the Statutes of Dervio, drafted in the years from 1384 to 1389, which dictated precise rules on civil and social life; this precious document is still existing today: it has been translated into Italian and published by the Cultural Department of the Municipality of Dervio.
Under Austrian domination in the 18th century, thanks to the nearby mines in Val Varrone, the iron industry boomed. The 19th century saw the emergence of many businesses, such as the famous Aziende Redaelli, four cutting-edge paper mills, shipyards, and a thriving spinning mill.
Today Dervio is a well-equipped tourist center and offers many leisure opportunities, mainly thanks to its long beach and the very large lawn behind it. An important sailing school is headquartered here, and along the lake shore you will find plenty of clubs and kiosks.
For trekking enthusiasts, the mountains surrounding Dervio offer numerous beautiful hiking and walking opportunities.
