A Walk on the Greenway of Tremezzo, Lake Como, visit to the old village, Meier Park, the hamlet of Bonzanigo with the House of Nativity Scenes.
The municipality of Tremezzina begins at Villa Carlotta, in the hamlet of Tremezzo.
As you walk southward along the Greenway, keep the lake on your left and be ready to enter the most luxurious and touristic heart of the entire Lake Como area.
Welcoming you is an authentic icon of Art Nuoveau, the Grand Hotel Tremezzo. If you want to truly experience the magic glamour of the Belle Époque you can stay or simply dine here, wallet permitting.
From here we offer you two options: the greenway continues along the lake, where you will find many restaurants, clubs, small arcades with tables overlooking the lake and cute areas set up for lunches, aperitifs and dinners; however, we suggest a small detour. Immediately after the Grand Hotel Tremezzo, go up Via Mazzini; shortly after, you will find on the left a very pretty vacation home, Casa Aquadulza, with a restaurant and an adjoining room.
Turn left and walk down Via Alessandro Volta, entering the old village of Tremezzo. Along this lane is the wine cellar Le Follie, a delightful and intimate eatery that offers excellent wines and chopping boards with local products. The alley ends as you return to the shore of the lake, on the Greenway, near the historic butcher shop Riva and the small church of San Bartolomeo.
Keep going on your right and a few meters ahead, opposite La Darsena restaurant, you see Villa Mainona, which hosts the Museo del Paesaggio.
Walk other 50 meters and near the junction with Via Peduzzi, on your left, notice a small madonnina with two wrought-iron gates leading to Meier Park. The park is a small botanical and architectural jewel with a monumental staircase that connects the park itself with the villa; there is a beautiful fountain decorated with a female figure intent on bathing, and two dolphins ridden by young boys.
The park also hosts some beautiful redwoods; you will need three people to fully embrace their imposing trunk! As you walk through the entire park, you will also notice a lounge bar near the exit where you can enjoy a nice aperitif from the terrace overlooking the lake.
Once you leave the park, your attention will be immediately caught by the bright colors of the Church San Lorenzo, an eclectic building with neo-Gothic and neo-Romanesque elements; the outside is simply stunning, and we really recommend visiting it. The interior, with a circular plan and massive presence of gold decorations, reminded us of the most beautiful Orthodox churches.
Continue your walk passing by Villa Lina and Villa Marie - a small stone staircase goes up here: look how pretty the kindergarten is! – and you will finally arrive at the magnificent Villa Sola Cabiati, one of the most charming residences on Lake Como which was the former residence of the Serbelloni dukes in the18th century.
A little further behind, to its left, the elegance of Villa Albertoni Carlia is visible. The Greenway continues along the lake to the intersection with Via Febo Sala. Here go up to the right; from now on the Greenway signs will be well marked with a blue sign and yellow arrow.
At the beginning of the climb, you immediately notice Villa Pessina, a fairy-tale mansion with a spectacular turret. The building is a copy of the more famous Villa La Gaeta, best known for being featured in the James Bond film - Casino Royale.
Go up via Febo Sala, turn left on the bridge and climb to the hamlet of Bonzanigo. Here the path enters a truly magical hamlet, the oldest heart of Tremezzina: we suggest visiting it randomly, go wherever your heart takes you and enjoy every little detail.
Then look for a small alley in the middle of the hamlet that leads to a facade with windows covered with Ottoman grates. Their history is full of charm: some local merchants had gone as far as Budapest, where they had set up some businesses, and when they had to flee the Ottoman invasion they returned to the lake, taking these grates with them.
At the end of the village another surprise will leave you speechless: the House of Nativity Scenes, an incredible collection of meticulously handmade pieces installed in an old house. It will feel like Christmas again.
Continuing up the Greenway, uphill, you come to the church of S. Abbondio and its incredible lake-view terrace. A few meters from here, partisans shot Benito Mussolini: you will find a memorial plaque here (45.981227796134846, 9.203427364360335).
The greenway continues, taking you back to the highway Statale Regina along the lake.
