Villa del Balbianello. Without any doubt it is the best known example of Convent turned into a residential villa. During the late Middle Ages the Monastery became a Convent for Franciscan Friars first and afterwards for Cappuccino Friars, who inhabited it until it was suppressed.
In 1787 the complex was sold to Cardinal Durini, who turned it into a luxurious residential villa. After his death, the villa became property of the family Arconati Visconti who made several architectonical changes.
In the end the villa was bought by Guido Monzino, who at his death left it to the F. A. I. (Italian Ambient Foundation for preserving monuments and environments).
The gardens of the Villa are now open to the public. Visits inside the villa are only with a guided tour.
