Visit the Church of the Madonna de la Soledad
The church belonged to the noble family Motta from Gravedona. It was built between the 17th and the 18th century with its front overlooking Piazza Mazzini, the last square of the most ancient hamlet of the village.
Two big windows enlighten the interior frescoes which depict a Saint Michael, a Madonna, a Saint Anthony Abbot and a Christ on the Cross. Above the only altar there is a decoration at Roccaille (stones and shells) which embellishes the polygonal apse.
Of particular interest is the leather frontal- altar with floral patterns and the image of the Madonna of the Solitude in its centre. The statue of the Virgin Mary is placed into a star shaped niche crowned with the inscription: Consolàtrix afflictòrum (Comforter of the suffering people).
The statue has an aureole on its head and is wearing a black mantle on a white embroidered dress; in its hands it carries the rosary. In the past, it was thought that the church was dedicated to the soldiers either because of the penitent aspect of the simulacra of the Madonna, or because of the mistaken translation from the Spanish word Soledad which is instead Solidarity..
