Visit Gera Lario, Lake Como

Located at the mouth of the Mera, a wonderful river that offers a still unspoiled landscape and is home to a rich fauna, Gera Lario is the last village on the western shore of the lake, in the far north. In the immediate vicinity is a nature-reserve protected by the region, the Pian di Spagna. Ruins and archaeological finds dating back to Roman times have been found in this area, including the famous epigraph inscribed with the name Aneuniates, the ancient inhabitants of the Olonio lands. It was in this very area that the Roman village of Olonium had been built, probably a key crossroads for trade and the movement of Roman troops to the Alpine passes, towards the Gallic and Germanic lands.

The nature-reserve Pian di Spagna covers an area that has always been disputed between land and water. The peculiarity of its geographical position makes this area rich in interesting observation points, both from a naturalistic and a historical-cultural point of view. The area is characterized by multiple enchanting environments: ponds, rivers, streams, culverts, beaches and reed beds that provide shelter for diving ducks, surface ducks, swans, coots, a few rare sea ducks, cormorants, dipper blackbirds and herons. It is also not uncommon here to spot herds of deer and beautiful jackrabbits.

the town was always devoted to fishing and silkworm breeding, but in our days, Gera pursues its strong tourist vocation, offering numerous and efficient accommodations. Indeed, there is no shortage of hotels, typical restaurants, bathing lidos and equipped beaches.

The place is a real paradise for young kite-surfers and windsurfers, thanks to its favorable position to the constant winds that move the waters of the lake. There are also numerous bicycle paths that safely connect the town with neighboring municipalities.

What to do, to visit and to see in Gera Lario

In the square of Gera Lario is the church of Our Lady of Fatima, dating from 1630 and later renamed the Sanctuary of the Fishermen of Italy.

A few meters from the shore, on the old Strada Regina, stands the ancient church of San Vincenzo. It was built in the 11th century on the remains of a Roman building and it was re-founded almost completely in the 15th century.

If you find yourself strolling through the streets of Gera Lario you will encounter, even on the facades of some historic houses, small Votive Wayside Shrines, or rather religious frescoes from a bygone era.

A walk in the Pian di Spagna nature-park, then, will offer you a truly evocative experience; it is not difficult to encounter fed herds of majestic deer here!
