Was the European Union born on Lake Como?

How was the European Union born?

Among the founding protagonists of today's European Union is Konrad Hermann Joseph Adenauer. Walking around Griante, you will often happen to read this name. But who was he?
Konrad Adenauer was a German politician, founder of the CDU party, and more importantly the first German chancellor after World War II. He had the daunting task of raising Germany from the economic and moral abyss.
Considered the founder of modern Germany, Adenauer was able to set up an intense pro-Western political activity, leading his country toward a complete European reconciliation.
We like to think that the bud of the future Europe was born right on the shores our magnificent Lake Como, where Adenauer used to meet Heads of State in his Villa La Collina in Griante. Surrounded by the enchantment of our landscapes, they discussed the future and peace, finally dreaming of a single free European community.
The fathers of our Europe were primarily three: Adenauer, Schuman and our Prime Minister Alcide De Gasperi. An Italian, a Frenchman and a German. Three men of strong faith, three victims persecuted by Nazi-fascism, three souls bound by a common suffering and united in the vision of a future united Europe: the political and institutional relationship soon gave way to a true, deep friendship.
The war that had just ended had left their respective countries shattered, filled with hatred and resentment. Only the humility, faith and will of these enlightened men made it possible to take the first steps toward the unity of peoples.

Seid umschlungen, Millionen.
Diesen Kuß der ganzen Welt!
Brüder! Über'm Sternenzelt
Muß ein lieber Vater wohnen.

“Be embraced, ye millions!
This kiss is for the whole world!
Brothers, above the arch of stars
A loving Father surely dwells”.

These are the lines of Friedrich von Schiller, German poet and cantor of the Ode to Joy. The text was later set to music by Ludwig van Beethoven and adopted, later, as the European anthem.
Yes, we like to think of it that way. The idea of a united Europe was born here, on Lake Como.
